About Us

Mata-Leao Combat Sports is a Mixed Martial Arts training facility located in SE Portland, Oregon. We offer training in Mixed Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Submission Wrestling and Self-Defense. Our curriculum is ran by highly trained black belts that are extremely passionate in the arts of helping other achieve their goals. Wether on the road to achieving a higher belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or strengthening your overall fitness conditioning, our environment is well suited for your success. We are located at 1115 SE Stephens st., Portland. The new facility is over 4000 sq. ft. with a large garage door in the main training area, boxing ring, Thai bags, changing room, shower, countless of strength/ conditioning toys and over 2000 sq. ft. of mat space.

Instructors

Omar Santiago

omarOmar Santiago started training martial arts in 1996 in Eugene, OR. After a year and a half of trying out various martial arts he was introduced to the beautiful life of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Jeet Kune Do, and Muay Thai Kickboxing. Training with Northwest Martial Arts he was shortly introduced to Wellington “Megaton” Diaz, a legend in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He was then invited to Brazil to train with Royler Gracie at the legendary Gracie Humaita Academy in Rio de Janeiro. Since then Omar has been obsessed with the sport of BJJ and continues to travel to Brazil to train and compete in the “Mudials” Worlds of Jiu Jitsu and The Masters of Jiu Jitsu. In 2001, Omar moved to Portland, OR where he has been training and teaching BJJ and Mixed Martial Arts at numerous gyms ever since. When Omar is not traveling and competing in his beloved sport, he spends a lot of his time training and trying to introduce people of all ages into the beautiful life martial arts has to offer.

Harold Utterback

HaroldHarold Utterback started in Muay Thai Kickboxing, Filipino Kali and JKD Concepts in 1992 underTerry Grant and Thomas Cruise. He met Rickson Gracie in 1993 and then met Wellington “Megaton” Dias in 1996. Harold is a Black Belt representative in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under the legendary 4X World Championship Medalist Wellington “Megaton” Dias. An admit competitor he has numerous competitions in Boxing, Judo, Sambo and of course, his beloved Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Megaton Dias invited him to Brazil in 2002 to compete in the Mudial “Worlds of Jiu Jitsu” and the Masters of Jiu Jitsu. Since then he has returned every year with his friends and students to compete and father his jiu jitsu knowledge and teaching methods.

Grant Conley

grant_wrestlingGrant Conley was born and raised in Huntington Beach, California, where his father, a brown belt in kung fu, and amateur kickboxer, trained him as a young child in their city beach apartment garage. It was there and then, that he fell in love with the martial arts that began his lifelong pursuit of maintaining the disciplines. By the age of ten, he won an all city intercity martial arts tournament, taking 1st place. As he progressed in his knowledge, he began to focus more on boxing, attending Grand Avenue boxing in Portland Oregon. At the age of 13, he started collegiate style wrestling on his school team, and continued all the way through his senior year in high school, combining a total of 7 years experience and training in wrestling and in tournaments as well. In between training at Mataleao, Grant likes to stay fit and enjoys running, lifting weights, and sport climbing to stay in optimal shape and conditioning. His focus is now to stay committed to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, and MMA as a long-term lifestyle, while teaching wrestling basics during the week at Mata-Leao.
