That’s right, its that time again. The time to live, share, give, laugh and love is upon us once again. Mark your calendar cause its right around the corner this coming December 4th, 2015.
Once again Mata-Leao Combat Sports will be hosting its Annual Holiday Season Potluck/ Promotions Party on Friday December 4th, 2015. As always we will be having open gym at 6:00 to get some good training in before the festivities. Training will be followed up by belt promotions and our Family Team Photo at 7:00. Right after we will be conducting our standard festive eating, drinking, laughing and having tons of fun. Feel free to bring anything tasty to eat or drink to share with the team as will be having the grill roaring and the fun flowing all night.
We understand that in December a lot of you have work related holiday parties as well to attend. If your other affair lands on this date, we kindly ask that you please attend the Belt Promotions and Family Team Photo at 7-8:00pm. The students getting promoted will love your support (plus,you might be getting promoted ~ Don’t want to miss that!) also we would love to see you in our Family Team Photo.
Again we are looking forward to seeing everyone Friday December 4th for our Annual Holiday Party!

Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Promotional Tests coming up!
These will be the last time this year that you will be able to showcase your hard work and put it to the test.
For Muay Thai, we will be conducting two of the 4 Level tests from our Muay Thai Fundamentals curriculum.
This coming Friday at 6:00pm there will be NO regular class, we will be giving the Muay Thai Level 1 test.
For those of you that have completed the Level 1 Test and received their certificate. You will be allowed to attend the Level 2 Test this Sunday at 3:30pm.
Again, if you don’t know. We have split up our Muay Thai Fundamentals curriculum into 4 Levels and happily award delightfully handsome certificates of authenticity to those that showcase their hard work and proper technique.
Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Fundamentals test date will be moved from our original last Thursday of the month to Thursday December 3rd. Giving you all an extra week to work on your techniques.

Students who are unable to participate during any of the above listed times should schedule a private test with Omar by sending an email to mataleaocs@gmail.com with subject line “Schedule My Private Promotional Test”. (For this, they will be charged the rate of a private lesson.)
OUR 2015 Fall GRAPPLE-A-THON for the Wheel-to-Walk Foundation was a tremendous success !
We are extremely happy to announce that our Grapple-A-Thon that we ran this fall for the Wheel-To-Walk Foundation came to a sensational outcome. With the help of all of you that participated we were able to raise close to $600.
Jill Foster (Development Director) let us know that with our help, the Wheel to Walk was able to purchase what is called, a truck trike for a 12 year old boy named, Will, who lives in Damascus. Will was born with genetic intellectual disabilities.
Will’s mother wrote to us saying:
“Will was so excited today when he got off the bus to see his new trike! He ran right past his Dad and myself to check out the cool new “bike” in our driveway. He rode around our driveway for 45 min…. There are not many things Will does for that long in one stretch. Your foundation has truly been a blessing for us.”
Your donation also went to purchase additional intensive physical therapy sessions for Kylie, age 7, who lives here in Portland. Kylie was born with CP-lp36 Deletion Syndrome, leaving her with many challenges. I currently, do not have a photo of Kylie, but I’m hoping to report back to you soon as to her progress from these (very important) therapy sessions.
We can’t begin express our gratitude to all that participated in this event with a special shout out to Daria Maletis for being the front runner and helping this happen.
It is without saying that this accomplishment is at the apex of the long list of the many things that we want to accomplish in this world. We strongly believe that our path to helping people in our community to better their lives through our martial arts and fitness culture is the righteous one. To take it off the beaten path and help those outside of our martial arts community is extremely honorable.

<PARENTS!> Mark your calendars! Kids Testing and Promotions Pizza Party is coming up.
Testing for this 6 week part of the curriculum will be conducted on:
Tuesday December 8 at 4:00pm
and Friday December 11 at 4:00pm
Our second Annual Kids Promotions Pizza Party will be held Saturday December 12th, 2015. The promotions will be at 3:00pm. We will train and play games from 2-3:00pm. Please remember to have your kids collect and bring in their sticker scrolls to see who will get the trophies. This will be a special day for the kids, so bring your family and friends to partake in this magical moment, (don’t forget your good cameras).
Holiday Schedule
Mata-Leao Combat Sports will also take a break from training over the Christmas and New Year holidays. In observance of these holidays, the academy will be closed on some days and will hold Open Mat hours (with no regularly scheduled classes) on other days. Please see our holiday schedule below.

During Open Mat hours, MLCS students are welcome to come in and hit the bags, pads and roll. Muay Thai sparring, however, is strictly prohibited during these sessions (unless it is coordinated by a head coach).

Everyone has been training their Brazilian jiu jitsu real hard these last two months. Time to put those portland jiu jitsu skills to the test and showcase
your secret moves at the next Subleague. This particular Portland jiu jitsu tournament is a submission only tournament. This is a fun format in which you get to compete with everyone in your bracket. This allows you to get lots of rounds and experience. You win by having the most submissions in your bracket. This is a great tournament for beginners. Come join us again for a great time with your Mata-Leao Portland Jiu Jitsu family and show off your hard work.
Megaton and Mackenzie Dern win the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Pans Championship!
Congratulations to our Senior Chief Coach Wellington “MEGATON” Dias for winning once again the prestigious Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Pans tournament today in Irvine, California at the Bren Event Center.
And also big congrats to his daughter Mackenzie Dern for winning her first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Pans Championship. She also acquired the Second Place medal in the Absolute division. What a beast! So proud to represent these two icons of our beautiful sport of Brazilian Jiu jitsu.
Also we would like to give a tremendous shout out to one of our most dedicated students, Minu Oh for taking the time and effort to go down to the Pans Championship by herself and representing her team. As am being told that she might have gotten robbed on her points, the matter of the fact is that she tried and learned. Minu you are an inspiration to us all. Congratulations and keep up the great work!
