Paulo Costa Elbows Nurse: UFC middleweight fighter Paulo Costa was reportedly arrested after allegedly assaulting a nurse while trying to get a COVID-19 vaccination card while in Brazil.

According to Globo, the alleged incident happened on Monday night at a shopping center in the city of Contagem. The Municipal Guard was then alerted by health care workers who had witnessed it. They claim that Costa had tried to gain a proof-of-vaccine card without actually receiving the vaccine itself.

Costa, 31, and a 26-year-old female nurse were taken to the Contagem Duty Police Station, where they were both questioned about the alleged assault.

Last October, before he lost to Marvin Vettori, Costa stated that he doesn’t want to take the COVID-19 vaccine since he is “healthy” and “young.” Still, he did say that, should the vaccine be necessary for one of his fights, he would rethink his position.

According to what the health care workers told police, Costa arrived to receive his COVID-19 vaccine, but attempted to leave with a vaccination card before the shot could be delivered.

“The card was filled out. The workers said that, at the time of application, he did not accept to be vaccinated, he wanted to leave with the card, and they did not accept it. At that moment, a nurse was elbowed,” Municipal Guard Marco Mota stated.

Costa, however, has a different version of the events.

“He said he got the vaccine, but the nurses didn’t let him go out with the card,” Mota detailed. “He said it generated stress. He took the card and left. At that moment, a nurse grabbed him by the arm, and he broke free,”

According to the report, while the nurse did not require medical care, she told the guards that her lips were swollen from the strike from Costa.

Costa was questioned by police, after which he was released. The alleged victim filed a criminal complaint, so he will be due in court for a hearing.

Costa’s fight with Luke Rockhold, which was originally slated for UFC 277 on July 30, was pushed back to Aug. 20 at an event for which no venue or location has been confirmed.

Costa will attempt to end a two-fight losing streak after losing back-to-back fights against middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and Marvin Vettori.
